Robin Systems Launches AWS-Based Community and Developer Big Data Wares Robin Systems Inc. launched free community editions and developer editions of its Big Data wares and database “as a service” wares on Amazon Web Services Inc.’s (AWS). Those Big Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) and Database-as-a-Service (DaaS) offerings come with the Robin Cloud Platform, which leverages container technology and container-aware software-defined storage to pool commodity hardware in order to create versatile compute and storage resources. It claims that its approach eliminates the need for applications to use servers, virtual machines, and storage boundaries. This allows them to work across different machines, clouds, and platforms. “What the company did was develop a way of using containers to encapsulate, deliver applications and component in a way which offers greater-than in-a-VM performance and great application agility. A dashboard that provides a great deal more granular information about application execution was also created,” Dan Kusnetsky stated in an article in Virtualization and Cloud Review Magazine. The Robin Cloud Platform has been made available to developers and communities via AWS. However, the community edition is only limited in functionality. Robin Systems describes these two AWS-hosted editions as follows:

  • Developer edition is for developers who want to experiment with container-based stateful apps in cloud. Robin DE is available for deployment on AWS with a single node and allows you to run stateful apps with separate compute and storage. You can deploy your first application in a single click and then spin up clusters in minutes. You can deploy Cassandra or MongoDB, Elasticsearch and ELK, MySQL or your own app (except Oracle and Hadoop (Cloudera, Hortonworks).
  • The Community edition is perfect for small DevOps teams who want to experiment with container-based apps and get started with RCP. Robin CE can be deployed on AWS with up five nodes. This is great for small distributed dev/test apps. Robin CE is optimized for seamless user experience. It comes with all RCP features, allowing you to save money with decoupled compute storage and guaranteed performance. Everything can be deployed in Developer Edition plus Hadoop (Cloudera, Hortonworks excluded).

Jay Lyman, principal analyst at 451 Research, stated that Robin Systems made RCP available to the community and developers. These new editions could also be used by organizations to address the Big Data technology and applications challenges, increasing the ability of nodes to aggregate compute and storage resources. The developer and community editions are free, but normal AWS usage fees apply.
