Your team is already overwhelmed. As launch time approaches, a client approaches your team with (another!) request. You have already made some additional requests to your team. Now it’s time for you to ask them to do even more.
What are you going do? You already have all your favors. Your team is driving at 100% so you don’t have any currency. How can you approach a tired team and ask them to do more work?
Kelly and I discuss how we approach this issue in this video. We discuss how we handle requests to add work when our teams already have enough. You can find answers to questions like:
Who should I first approach to my request?
Is it legal for me to bribe my staff? What are some ways I can bribe my team members?
When should I submit a request for a change to increase scope work?

As we have mentioned in the video: In an ideal world, with a flawless plan and seamless communication, we wouldn’t have to ask our staff members to do work that is beyond their scope.
It’s not a perfect world. Scope creep is a problem with almost every project. We must find ways to build happy, high-performing teams, despite shrinking budgets, ad hoc requests, and a constantly changing workplace.
This is our challenge as project managers. You must be prepared to manage client requests by knowing all project controls. You should also know how to identify and address scope creep in projects.
What is your take?
What can you do when your team is being asked to do work that isn’t in line with their agreement? How can you motivate your team to deliver the project on time, while ensuring they aren’t being overworked?
